“They are very excited in Moscow,” Nadia said. “I gave them no details over the phone. Just told them that our reconaissance was successful and that they, were to provide transportation and top secrecy. We will meet at Base Rozavi. You will never have heard of it.”

“Pink Base. Your highly secret underground control center for the Baltic.”

She raised her eyebrows. “Your intelligence people are a lot better than I imagined.”

“That’s not important any more, is it?”

“No. May it stay that way. This newfound alliance * between our countries, it is what you Americans call a fringe benefit of the galactic war.”

“It surely is, the only decent thing that has come out of the whole mess so far. It had to take a war in outer space to show us that our national differences were just family squabbles.”

“It is very hot here and I am most uncomfortable,” Srparr said. The fur-like tendrils that covered his body were waving and thrashing violently. “Too hot.”

“Just a few minutes more,” Nadia said. “We’ll be at the air base. You will be put aboard a plane at once. All of the aircraft are air conditioned so it can be adjusted to a lower temperature. And the base where we are going can be cooled as well. Can you hold out?”

“Will hold out. Don’t feel good.” The alien slumped in discomfort and appeared to go to sleep. “Have my people been informed?” Rob asked. “Yes. Most of the staff of your embassy in Moscow is on the way there now.”

“Then you won’t need me. They’ll set up the recording and communication links, the liaison that we will need. My job now is to report everything that has happened to Washington. There will have to be agreement on the absolutely top level when we start working with the Blettr.”

“There should be no problem. There will be supersonic aircraft available at the base. I have authorization right from the top. By the time you telephone through your flight plan we’ll have a craft on the line.”

Nadia was as good as her word. It was a two-place reconaissance craft that could hit Mach 3.6 in an emergency. This was an emergency. When they reached cruising altitude, Rob dozed off and woke only when the jar of lowering the landing gear shook him awake. They dropped through layers of thick cloud to set down on the wet runway in the middle of a heavy rainstorm. Following instructions from the tower, the pilot waited on the runway until a follow-me car appeared. They ended up on a taxiway out of sight of the terminal, and the engines had just died into silence when the Army helicopter dropped down out of the mist.

Rob felt filthy and unshaven, and he was, when he was ushered into the conference room deep under the Pentagon. Not a word had been spoken to him by his military escort when he had been rushed here. Bonnington came forward to greet him, holding out his hand.

“You did it, my boy, you did it.
